PDF Generation Documentation

To avoid confusion, we refer to a PDF file which contains one page as a "single-page PDF" and a PDF file which contains multiple pages as a "multi-page PDF." Sinlge-page PDF files should be given a name which corresponds to the document page number. Submitting multi-page PDFs can cause issues with imposition. If you have any questions about naming conventions, please ask your CSR for more information. There are a number of solutions for creating single-page PDF files:

  • Print each page separately: Time consuming but cheap and accurate.
  • Print a large multi-page PDF file, and separate in Acrobat: Only works with Acrobat 7. Open the file and go to Document/Extract Pages..., then select Extract Pages As Separate files. You may have to rename the files if the automatic naming in Acrobat doesn't work for your particular document.
  • Use third-party software:

Here are some links to useful software:

BatchPrint (Quark only)

BatchOutput (InDesign only)

Kodak Insite Desktop (Quark and InDesign) Insite Desktop also preflights files on the fly.

Generic Distiller Settings

You can download the Job Options file to load into Distiller. You must first create a composite CMYK PostScript file from your layout application to make your PDF. Do not use Distiller 3 to create PDFs, as it will not embed all of the fonts in the PDF, which will negatively affect the output of your document.

These are "Job Options" files, which need to be placed in the "Settings" folder on your computer. You will need to UnZip the files after they have been downloaded.

In Distiller 6, 7 and 8, you also have the option of creating a PDF/X1a file. This type of PDF is compatible with Trend's workflow, so feel free to use it.

Adobe InDesign CS3
Go to “File/Adobe PDF Presets/Define… ” and load the linked file (don't forget to unzip it first!). Download

Adobe InDesign CS4
Go to “File/Adobe PDF Presets/Define… ” and load the linked file (don't forget to unzip it first!). Download

Adobe Illustrator (all versions)
We strongly discourage the use of Illustrator as a layout program. Use InDesign instead. If you absolutely need to design something in Illustrator, then save as an EPS and place in a layout program to create your PDF. This will give the correct crop marks, flattening, etc. as well as making for a cleaner PDF.
